My Minimalist Desk Setup (2026 Edition)

I've been refining my desk setup for three years. Every item has survived multiple rounds of "do I actually use this?" purges.

Here's what made the cut - and more importantly, why.

The Core Setup

1. MacBook Pro 14" (or your laptop)
Everything starts here. I chose the 14" over the 16" specifically because it's more portable. The smaller screen forces me to use an external monitor at my desk, which creates better ergonomics.

Why it works: One primary computer means no file syncing issues, no "which device did I save that on?" moments.

2. LG 27" 4K Monitor**
Single monitor. Not two. Not three. One.

This was hard to accept at first. I used to run three monitors and felt like a NASA mission controller. But here's what I learned: multiple monitors don't make you more productive - they make you more distracted.

With one monitor, I'm forced to focus on one task at a time. Game changer.

Mounted on a monitor arm to free up desk space and adjust height for proper ergonomics.

3. Logitech MX Keys Mini Keyboard
Wireless, low-profile, perfect size. The mini version is crucial - it frees up desk space and brings your mouse closer (better ergonomics).

Backlit keys are helpful for early morning work sessions. Battery lasts about 2 months with regular use.

4. Logitech MX Master 3S Mouse
Pairs perfectly with the keyboard. The horizontal scroll wheel is surprisingly useful for spreadsheets and timelines.

Ergonomic design prevents wrist strain during long work sessions.

Essential Accessories

BenQ ScreenBar Lamp
This changed my life. Seriously.

Instead of a desk lamp that takes up space, this clips onto your monitor and lights your desk perfectly. No glare on screen, no shadows, automatic dimming.

Worth every penny if you work in the evenings.

Simple Cable Management Box
Nothing fancy. Just a $15 box that hides the power strip and excess cables.

Clean desk = clear mind. This one item made the biggest visual difference.

 Leather Desk Mat
Protects the desk, defines the workspace, and adds warmth to an otherwise tech-heavy setup.

Skip the RGB gaming mats. Go for something simple in brown or black leather.

What I Removed (And Don't Miss)

- **Second and third monitors** - Distraction machines
- **Wireless charging pad** - Just use a cable, it's faster
- **Desk organizer with 47 compartments** - Accumulated junk
- **Standing desk converter** - Used it twice, then it became a shelf
- **Tablet "for notes"** - Phone or laptop works fine
- **Fancy mechanical keyboard** - Looked cool, too loud for video calls
- **Smart speaker** - Another distraction

The Setup Process

Here's how I arrange everything for maximum productivity:

1. **Monitor at eye level** (top of screen at or slightly below eye level)
2. **Keyboard and mouse centered** with laptop to the side
3. **Lamp positioned** to light desk without screen glare
4. **Cables routed** behind monitor arm, then into cable box
5. **Phone face-down** on far corner (or in another room)

The Results

After three years of refinement:
- **2x increase** in focused work time
- **Zero cable clutter**
- **5-minute setup time** if I need to move locations
- **Everything wireless** except monitor (for better refresh rate)
- **Total cost:** ~$1,500 (vs. my old $3,000+ setup)

What About You?
You don't need everything on this list. Start with:
1. Good keyboard and mouse (wireless if possible)
2. External monitor (if using laptop)
3. Cable management solution

Add things only when you have a specific problem to solve.
